Introduction

This text provides some aggregate data on the number of libraries worldwide and their main features (staff, users, and loaning activities). This chapter also sets out libraries’ position within the cultural and creative industries, a segment of the economy that has gained increasing attention since the 1990s. Finally, this text sketches the structure of the book aimed at investigating, from an economic point of view, libraries’ activities and their relationship with the society and economy.
