ABSTRACT

Here, we draw on Pierre Bourdieu to look at legacies and governance transformation in resource communities. We use the Bourdieu concept of multiple capitals to show that resource-dependent communities reveal particular patterns of capital concentration and conversion and often symbolic violence inflicted upon their residents. We understand this as an imposed yet internalized redefinition of self, limiting the interpretation of self, environment and realistic futures. We reflect on what healing can mean for a community where the capital for individual reinvention has been out of reach for many and where symbolic violence has been prevalent.
