ABSTRACT
To any social scientist or informed lay person, economic development must be, if not the most important economic issue of our times, certainly one that ranks very high among other pressing international economic problems. Indeed, even other problems that have garnered general attention – global warming; inequality; huge migrant flows of people fleeing oppression, civil wars or lack of economic opportunity; and the struggle against the current and future pandemics – are intimately intertwined with development.
