ABSTRACT

This chapter is the first of the three ethnographical chapters, concentrating on the spatial and material features of a typical Rainbow Gathering camp in Europe. The chapter details the essential and typical features of the Rainbow camp, its layout, infrastructure, certain important spatial features, and their links to social and cultural forms in the guise of Gathering subcamps. The chapter also describes some of the main differences that exist between Rainbow camp traditions in Europe and their counterparts in the US Rainbow culture. The chapter finishes with two discussions regarding Rainbow's internal controversies regarding attitudes towards nature and aspects of diversity.
