ABSTRACT

This book examines official understandings of Chinese identity in the People's Republic of China, in the societies of Mainland China and Hong Kong. This chapter starts by introducing the state of multicultural reality and diverse identities around the world. This chapter points out that the global context impacts the development and social reality of diverse identities and poses challenges and opportunities for the Chinese and Hong Kong governments to rethink and modify their current approaches for understanding identity in order to better accommodate all people. Then, this chapter describes the problem this book focuses on and the methodology and significance of this book. The organization of the rest of the chapters of this book will be given in the concluding section.
