ABSTRACT

In this chapter we focus on sensory processing differences and DME/2e. It starts with explaining what sensory integration is, with a brief look at the eight sensory systems in the human body and their main functions with regards to sensory processing. Subsequent to that, the chapter explains what difficulties with sensory integration (or sensory processing) are by referencing and integrating two well-known models in literature on the subject. Specifically, it draws attention to “sensory modulation disorder” and “sensory processing patterns” that are the main areas of sensory processing differences which the DME-C therapy approach addresses. It then discusses sensory processing differences in the context of high learning potential as well as the correlation with Dabrowski's overexcitabilities, in particular the psychomotor and sensual aspects, and offers guidance on the best therapy approach to help children with HLP who have sensory processing differences.
