ABSTRACT

By 2050, the United Nations estimates that between 2.7 and 3.2 billion people could be living in potential severely water-scarce areas, and an even larger number of people, 4.8–5.7 billion, could be living in potential water-scarce areas for at least one month per year. Water scarcity under climate change and the potential for desalination capacity growth to help alleviate the issue are assessed in this chapter. This growth may occur where the technology is already deployed or in countries where it is needed and have the physical, economic, and technical attributes to support it.
