ABSTRACT

Pressure on freshwater resources will continue to grow throughout the 21st century, with climate change emerging as the key driver of increasing water scarcity around the world. The deployment of desalination technology will gather pace and make a major contribution to domestic water provision in many parts of the world. The technology has proven its worth in many different environments. Despite an expected major growth in desalination production over the next few decades, decarbonisation of the power sector and better management of the brine waste could result in lower-than-expected environmental impacts.
