ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the positions on the use of self and signature therapeutic techniques and strategies of the couple and family therapy pioneers: Milton H. Erickson, Michele Weiner-Davis, John H. Weakland, Harry Goolishian, Michael White, Virginia Satir, and Peggy Papp. Some case vignettes are presented to help illustrate the use of self and some of the pioneers' signature techniques and strategies in action. The author refers to the seven pioneers as the co-authors, in that each of these couple and family therapy pioneers in their own unique ways co-authored with their clients more preferred future stories which helped liberate them from their presenting difficulties. The chapter concludes with a comparative analysis of the seven pioneers' therapeutic approaches.
