ABSTRACT

Developing a sense of audience is important for writers at all stages and levels. A sense of audience gives the writer a sense of what to say and how to best say it. The best way to develop a sense of audience is to provide one. This is done in step five of the five-step writing process: Sharing and publishing. Sharing is used here to indicate a one-time, in-person listening or reading of somebody’s writing. Sharing strategies include: Author’s chair, small groups, open mic day, dramatic readings, and drama. Publishing is used here to indicate writing that can be read or listened to by many people over time. Sharing strategies include podcasts and audio recordings, video recordings, class books, newspapers, arts magazines, and writing contests.
