ABSTRACT
Direct instruction is a basic pedagogical strategy that all teachers should be familiar with and able to use. The elements include (a) a purpose statement or behavioral objective, (b) input, (c) guided practice, (d) independent practice, and (e) review. Direct instruction is effective for learning low-level skills. Direct instruction should never be used as the primary means of instruction of any subject area, including reading and writing.
