ABSTRACT

The ultimate purpose of writing and speaking is to communicate ideas. Grammar and punctuation skills are a means to this end; they are not the end in and of themselves. An isolated approach to grammar instruction teaches grammar apart from authentic writing. This is not very effective. An embedded approach teaches grammar within the context of authentic writing. An embedded approach has been shown to be more effective. This chapter provides seven tips for using direct instruction to teach grammar and punctuation skills. This chapter also describes eleven pedagogical strategies that can be used to teach grammar and punctuation.
