ABSTRACT

Persuasive writing is used to convince people to do things or to change their views. It should be taught starting in kindergarten using very simple forms and graphic organizers. These are used as foundations for more advanced writing in the older grades. Seven strategies for teaching persuasive writing are described here: Support-a-statement, T-talk, T-talks with young students, basic essays, advanced essays, persuasive letters, and creative problem solving. These strategies all involve cognitive operations.
