ABSTRACT

Expository writing is used to transmit information. The goal is to do this as efficiently and effectively as possible. Expository writing usually involves gathering data of some sort. Instruction related to expository writing should begin at the kindergarten level. Three ineffective ways to teach expository writer are (a) writing reports, (b) write-to-learn courses, and (c) writing-intensive courses. Good expository writing is organized, concise, well-structured, and objective. Cognitive operations can be used in the teaching of expository writing. Five such operations that can be used here are: comparison, cause-effect, sequence, problem-solution, and description. Graphic organizers that can be used as scaffolds for early writing are included.
