ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses three types of personal communication skills necessary to thrive in the real world outside of school: Email, oral communication, and listening. Each of these skills should be addressed in developmentally appropriate ways starting in kindergarten. Informal email can be used to develop writing skills through the use of email buddies. Formal email will be necessary in most professional settings. The basic elements of a formal email message include salutation, introduction, purpose, message, block paragraphs, subject line, valediction, and signature. Oral communication skills are needed for effective personal and professional communication. Small group speeches are an effective way to learn these skills. Small group speeches can also be used to reinforce concepts taught in lessons and it develops naturally into writing. Listening with honest intent is a skill that will be used in personal and professional settings outside the school environment. It involves much more than simply being quiet.
