ABSTRACT

Initially teachers may have to help students identify writing topics, but the ultimate goal is for students to be able to select their own writing topics. This chapter describes nine pre-pre-writing strategies that can be used to help students generate ideas for writing. Teacher writing prompts can be used to generate writing ideas initially; however, the goal is to be prompt free. A good writing prompt is authentic and internal. Here students write about things which they have experienced. A bad writing prompt is inauthentic and external. When designing writing prompts, always test them on yourself to see if they will be good or not-good writing prompts.
