ABSTRACT

The sustainability and competitiveness of any organization depend on its ability to evaluate its performance. Supervisors are vital to ensuring that employees contribute to organizational goals. Evaluating and managing employees is a complex process and the responsibility of those supervising others. This chapter focuses on evaluating and managing positive and influential supervisors. “Performance management is a systematic and continuous process for improving organizational performance by developing the performance of individuals and teams”. Employee behaviors will change based on the activities being measured. However, be careful to consider the unintended consequences of what supervisors measure. Performance expectations should be measurable and verifiable. Effective and timely feedback is a critical component of a successful performance management system. If effective feedback is given to employees on their progress toward their goals, employee performance will improve. The evaluation process for all employees, including supervisors and managers, should follow the same framework and answer the same questions of what, who, when, where, and how.
