ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we explore how organized labor might reposition itself to exploit future opportunities. Repositioning involves a structural realignment through the creation of mega-unions, a redefining of the role of the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) as the umbrella federation hosting these newly formed conglomerates, remodeling of the relationship between labor organizations and workers to broaden the inclusion of the contingency workforce, and relatedly, the experimentation of new ideas on financing operations. The chapter is organized to address these contemplated changes. Before delving into future directions, however, we pause to summarize several key findings which inform the discussion.
