ABSTRACT

Family systems therapy teaches us that secrets in families are poison. Denial keeps us stuck. Acceptance helps us move forward. For millions of years all humans, early and modern alike, had to find their own food. Humans found they could control the growth and breeding of certain plants and animals. The indigenous peoples of the world have a rich history. Part of the social construction of history that people in the US have been raised on is the notion of brave and moral cowboys fighting savage “Indians.” The Pilgrims were astonished when an English-speaking emissary named Samoset walked boldly into the colony with a small group of warriors on March 16, 1621, and “saluted us in English and bade us welcome”. Race and its twin, racism, are recognized by historians and sociologists to be relatively recent social constructs.
