ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 explores the spatial characteristics of squares, and what lies behind their shape and scale. How does the spatial structure of squares relate to the ways they are perceived, and what is the role of the square in urban everyday life as well as in the festivals with their celebration of urban life? With reference to the ancient agoras, three ways of appropriating the physical space of square are outlined: the pompe or processions, the agon or competitions, and the choros or dances.
