ABSTRACT

The overall theme of Chapter 3 is to familiarize the reader with how Quality Function Deployment (QFD) can fit in their organization. It will begin by comparing sequential and concurrent design processes. Then, it will address how QFD compresses the total time from market identification and concept selection to fully ramped production. It will then address the product design process, concerning time and resources, then by discussing the QFD design and process steps, key tasks, and the responsibilities for each of those tasks. Five major QFD process steps will be introduced, defined, and illustrated, by example, how they are employed. A step-by-step process flow will be provided that will aid the reader in their QFD initiatives. The chapter will conclude with a discussion on several types of process charting examples: design process tree, design process task responsibility, product design process, and recommended sequencing chart of QFD activities.
