ABSTRACT

In September 1949 the Chinese Communist Party announced that it would recognize, revise or annul, according to their nature, the treaties concluded with foreign countries by the Kuomintang. In the eyes of the average Chinese, there could never be real friendship between China and the U.S.S.R. so long as the 1945 Treaty continued in force. The reception in the Kremlin in celebration of Stalin’s birthday was attended by visiting delegations from China and European countries. The Thirty-Year Sino-Soviet Treaty of Friendship, Alliance and Mutual Assistance was signed in Moscow on February 14, 1950, by Chou En-lai and Vyshinsky representing their respective countries. Soviet assistance to the Chinese People’s Government was justified by the signing of the Sino-Soviet Sinkiang Pact and the Sino-Soviet Civil Aviation Agreement on March 27, 1950, at Moscow.
