ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the impact of policy changes of the early 1990s on contractualisation in India's organised manufacturing sector. It examines employment quality across various industry groups by locating its determinants based on firm-level data provided by the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI). In order to carry out a substantive research study on contractualisation, an exhaustive database on industrial sector is needed. The detailed data pertaining to the organised sector are published by the ASI. Apart from this, there are other sources of data on the manufacturing sector, which throw ample light on employment situation and work conditions. The manufacturing sector production uses labour displacing technology that is used in the post-Fordist production. The reviewed literature has also underscored that contract labour is employed to improve cost competitiveness in the manufacturing production. The contractualisation of workforce at factory level has been strongly influenced by factors related to policies of globalisation.
