ABSTRACT

When the speech work includes a range of approaches, it makes sense to work in order from awareness activities through to production, then finish with functional games to apply any words covered in a meaningful way. As well as planning the structure of the group with all the relevant activities to meet the group members’ needs, decide on the size of the group and how many supporting adults one may need. This is particularly key when it comes to any Talk Tools exercises if the children need support and supervision to be able to use them correctly, or to keep them as therapy tools, not toys. Therapists have delivered Total Speech groups of many different sizes, from 2:2 ratio up to 2:8. This chapter describes three groups illustrating the developing skills through experience and motivation, developing skills to support early speech and literacy, and developing specific speech sounds in a multi-sensory way.
