ABSTRACT

The central issue of this chapter is the nature and the use of texts in Christian spirituality. The following critical questions are examined. How do texts function in developing Christian spiritualities today? What issues must we pay attention to in selecting and reading texts from the Christian historical past as well as those being developed in the present? Which texts should we pay attention to, and why? What role does the life experience of the reader bring to the current meaning and appropriation of the text from within these boundaries or frameworks?
