ABSTRACT

What this chapter seeks to do is bring into dialogue theories of human development with insights from Christian spirituality concerning the same. What we want to underline is that psychology can contribute to our understanding of human maturation, but the opposite is also true: Christian spirituality has much to offer psychological theory. In this chapter we will also examine some descriptions of human-spiritual development as they are presented from writers within the Christian traditions, for example, the concepts of mysticism, asceticism, and the threefold classical spiritual itinerary.
