ABSTRACT

As discussed in the previous chapter, the archaeological evidence is scanty on the presence of the chariot during the Gupta age. However, in Ajāntā art, pertaining to this period, chariots are represented in the narration of some Jātaka stories. On the wall of the back aisle in cave XVII (fifth century AD), there is a painting on the left-hand side. The subject appears to be a battle scene as all four arms of the army are portrayed here. In the middle of the painting, a team of four horses pulling a chariot at a gallop is portrayed (Figure 7.1). 1
