ABSTRACT

The methods adopted for the Research in the town of Radby may be classified as follows: interviews with external officials and individuals, interviews with residents in delinquent areas, participant observation, girls' secondary modern school camp, and Knoll Estate community centre. Interviews were obtained with people who had a special knowledge of Radby and of the specific areas by virtue of their occupation and/or long association with the town. The method adopted in Radby, apart from that of the structured interviews, was “participant observation”, described by Kluckhohn as “conscious and systematic sharing, in so far as circumstances permit, in the life activities and, on occasion, in the interests and effects of a group of persons. Dyke Street’s reputation, both from official records and from town gossip, is bad. A few preliminary visits to the street confirmed this view. Many of the houses had ragged, filthy curtains, and broken windows.
