ABSTRACT

The Pilot Survey was undertaken during five weeks in the early summer of 1953. The area was in an old, outlying district of Radby known as Station Hill. The reputation of Station Hill, and of several of its streets in particular, is not good. People who live in Radby itself don’t much like to admit it if they were born in Station Hill. Within this area, two streets, Chapel Street and John Street were chosen for a comparative study. The interviewers aimed at contacting as many families in the two streets as was possible in the five weeks. They wished to obtain certain factual information (structure of family, employment, etc.) and to sound the family’s attitude on certain Subjects. John Street has strong views on the need to train children in such things as spending habits, and Sunday School attendance. In general Chapel Street does not seem to distinguish between training and forcing.
