ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a comparison of two streets, namely Dyke Street and Gladstone Road, in another the “black” areas of Radby. Although the two streets lie within two minutes walk of each other, they have few contacts. Both streets have numerous relations living in their own or neighbouring streets, but only six Gladstone Road families were found who had relations in Dyke Street. The important point is that while Dyke Street has a certain number of houses which are well kept (and working class standards can be very high), Gladstone Road has none that could possibly be described as feckless or dirty. One most noticeable feature of Dyke Street life is the number of families who have relations in the street. Gladstone Road is alleged by some of its older householders to have declined socially but its houses are still regarded as a solid investment and as many as 33 people own their home.
