ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a comparison of assets, the dangers and ranking of two streets such as Carnation Street Area and the Knoll Estate. The Community Association’s policy is guided by a Management Committee, which is an elected body. The Knoll Estate presented a similar picture to the Research workers as the Carnation Street Area. The position was made more clear when further interviews were carried out, following the decision to adopt a 5-point scale ranking system for these two areas. The Research Workers had a clear picture of two main types of household. On the one hand there were those presenting characteristics comparable with the “black” sub-culture of Dyke Street, and on the other hand those which were comparable with the “white” households of Gladstone Road. It became obvious that it was necessary at this stage to make further distinctions between households within the “black” and within the “white “types respectively.
