ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a certain general aspects of the 5-point Scale and of the 225 households who were ranked on it. Mining is the chief occupation of all of the grades except V, but even in this, the highest grade, there are four unskilled workers; and the four men who are self-employed are in work of a manual nature such as house decorating. In spite of the significantly different characteristics apparent in the five grades, and in particular of the low level of housekeeping and of personal appearance in grades I and II, there is no great difference throughout the grades in the incomes of the chief male of the household. This is indicated by the similarity of occupations pursued by the chief male. The official delinquency figures for the I households is high. Several people spoke of the need for sex instruction for children, preferably at school.
