ABSTRACT

In this introductory chapter we provide a brief overview of some of the current issues influencing retirement decisions, to provide a context for what follows, a practical book about how to coach people towards a successful change in their lives and circumstances, as they move towards post-employment. Two key factors are explored: how coaching has evolved to now include retirement coaching as a growing specialism within the field; and how retirement itself is changing because of a range of social, economic, and political factors, both in the UK and globally. These in turn are impacting the world of work and what people expect from that part of their lives, and when and why they might leave behind employment. The overall rationale for the book is also explored, as is its purpose: how to coach people towards sound planning for and management of retirement, from both an employer and employee perspective, in a post-Covid work environment.
