ABSTRACT

Over the last 25 years coaching has grown in importance as a means of supporting both employees, self-employed persons, and those who are not in work, over a wide range of often employment-related issues. Within the coaching field retirement coaching is growing as a distinct specialism, largely as a result of economic conditions and a changing workplace, which in turn is influencing peoples’ decisions about when to leave behind their working life. Retirement coaching can help the retiree (or potential retiree) to consider their next steps. In this chapter we explore the reasons for this growth in interest in retirement issues, determine the boundaries of the field, consider the skills and competencies needed by the retirement coach, highlight the possible training available, as well as the conditions needed for providing the best type of this service.
