ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines our method of using structural metaphor for character analysis. To illustrate the method, we focus on the application of three particular structural metaphors: the machine metaphor, the organism metaphor, and the culture metaphor. These three were chosen because they have been widely recognized as useful for similar kinds of application in other contexts. The work of Gareth Morgan is referenced throughout since it has demonstrated the value of applying such structural metaphors for analysis. In Morgan’s case, his focus is on understanding the complexity of organizational life, and in ours the focus is on understanding the complexity of characters in a play as well as the overall action of a play. Specific question prompts are suggested that could be fruitful for use by actors and directors exploring character insights. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the value of applying multiple metaphors for the richest and most insightful character analysis.
