ABSTRACT

This chapter is a narrative account of a production in which one of the authors played a lead role. At the time of this production, the method of applying structural metaphor for character analysis proposed here had not yet been developed and was, therefore, not able to be applied. But the chapter reflects on how the author’s own character development and performance might have been impacted if the method had been applied. Therefore, it serves as a kind of retroactive application and illustration. Reinforcing the ideas presented in Chapter 5, this chapter focuses on the same three metaphors—machine, organism, and culture—as well as on the kinds of suggested questions and prompts to encourage consideration of character and overall action. There is a focus on how this method could have assisted in dealing with some unresolved challenges and issues that were faced in preparation for the production.
