ABSTRACT

This chapter details out the trends in the changing spatial character of Kumartuli’s idol-crafting spaces, and how traditional workshop spaces are slowly being replaced by commercial spaces detached from residences while the families are displaced. Following discussions on spatial layouts of workshop-residences, this chapter unfolds the emerging types of commercial workshops repurposed to accommodate the growing production numbers. The architectural detailing of spaces of production and the associated practices performed within these spaces are analysed and discussed.
