ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the status of social capital of urban residents. First of all, an extensive analysis of the various indicators of social capital created by discussion networks is conducted and a brief comparison of the differences in the basic characteristics of the eight types of individuals within this dimension of social capital is made. The same approach is also applied to the social capital created in the Chinese New Year greeting networks. Besides these analyses, we also compare the situations in China and in the United States and make a chronological analysis of the evolving social capital of Beijing residents.
