ABSTRACT

As scientists, the primary challenge we must navigate is our career. How many successful PhDs get a tenure-track position? According to Science, in 2017 that number was only 23%. Traditionally, scientific success has hinged more on getting published and securing funding for your research, and less on public outreach. Even in today’s world, when career opportunities for scientists have diversified beyond academia and outreach is given greater prominence, peer approval remains important. If you act in ways that are traditionally frowned upon in the scientific community, the consequences can be real. How can we realistically balance our public duty to communicate with our real-world job concerns?
