ABSTRACT

The lack of authority leaves us, the members of the 21st century’s western culture, as lonely orphans in a cold postmodern godless world. Are we ready to do away with God? As secular, liberal people, we have fired God, the first and foremost patriarch, from His position as the final judge in our ethical dilemmas. And yet, the fact that we gave Him this role and then fired Him, doesn’t mean that He (or She) does not exist. God is the exception to the rule that makes us all vulnerable, unwhole beings. God is an abstract, infinite object of desire, allowing a longing that isn’t limited to a final, temporal object, thus creating the infinitely desiring subject.
