ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to approach variations in style while carrying out the task of analysis: these differences can be observed at any given moment in the analyst’s work, from listening to the patient to formulating the interpretation. By paying attention to the course of the countertransference the analyst can become aware of the fluctuations in his receptive, cogitative, and expressive style. These fluctuations may be adequately contained or, on the contrary, may lead to unfortunate omissions or interventions. The logical and the lyrical are connected with certain features of paranoid-schizoid and depressive organizations as well as with Bion’s concept of PS↔D fluctuations.
