ABSTRACT

Real-time self-monitoring is a key enhanced cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT-E) procedure in that it enables patients to become aware of their thoughts and behaviour as they are happening, and therefore provides an opportunity for them to decentre and take corrective action in the moment. Patients may be asked to monitor any problematic behaviour, from eating to body checking, and then to discuss their experiences with their therapist. This chapter explains the purposes of self-monitoring and how it is best carried out.
