ABSTRACT

The Purging module is indicated for the young person using purging (i.e., vomiting and/or laxative misuse) as a routine form of weight control. The goal of the module is that the person decides to interrupt purging, after having evaluated the pros and cons with the therapist, rather than having the decision thrust upon them. The main procedures adopted by enhanced cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT-E) to address purging are self-monitoring purging in real time, managing the urge to purge with the “thing to say and things to do” procedure and addressing events and associated mood changes that trigger purging. The dangers and futility of purging and how these procedures can help are discussed at some length.
