ABSTRACT

As explained in this chapter, the Setbacks and Mindsets module is introduced in the later phase of Step Two of enhanced cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT-E), once the principal maintenance mechanisms of the eating disorder have been eroded. At this point the patient will start to notice that there are times when they experience periods free from control by their eating-disorder mindset. The strategies used for controlling the eating-disorder mindset are identifying stimuli that are likely to reactivate it, recognising the first signs that eating-disorder mindset is reasserting itself and displacing the mindset. Other strategies that may help decentre from the eating disorder mindset are discussed. These include exploring the origins of the overvaluation using a life chart, balancing acceptance and change, tackling the social pressure to be thin, wearing comfortable clothes, managing comments on appearance and practising healthy physical activity.
