ABSTRACT

Enhanced cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT-E) for young people is organised in three steps and includes review sessions during and after the treatment. These are described in this chapter. Step One of CBT-E has a duration of four weeks, two sessions per week, and the main objectives of increasing understanding of the psychological nature of the eating disorder and deciding to make the change. Step Two is highly personalised and addresses the individual psychopathology of young patients through specific modules. It involves one session a week in not underweight people or two sessions a week until weight regain is stable in those who have low weight, whereupon the frequency of the sessions will be changed to once a week. Step Three consists of three appointments held two weeks apart and is focused on ensuring that the changes made in treatment are maintained and ways to minimise the risk of relapse. Review sessions have the twin goals of monitoring progress and identifying any barriers to change. They are also an opportunity to individualise and adapt the treatment based on the evolving nature of the eating disorder. Post-treatment review sessions are held 4, 12 and 20 weeks after the end of treatment.
