ABSTRACT

Values-based leadership is inspired by an institutional leadership tradition of working on an organization's purpose in addition to the embodiment of the organizational mission, how values are maintained, and how they can be used to change and relate to the development and implementation of an organization's strategies and goals. In this chapter, we describe what characterizes values-based leadership and how this is different from authentic, transformational, and ethical leadership traditions. Values-based leaders are conscious of personal and organizational values and reflect on intentions, practices, and actions that are connected to values and how values influence organizations through daily operations, as well as in change processes.
