ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the basic concepts and features of the traditional classical test theory (CTT). It presents the concepts and comments related to CTT assumptions, test scoring, item analysis, reliability, equating of test scores, strengths, and limitations; and highlights the issues which imply the need for extensions of CTT that include, for example, classical modeling of item response functions and conditional errors of estimation, while maintaining simplicity and transparency of test scoring and interpretations. Such extensions, developed in the classical version of the D-scoring method of measurement (DSM), are presented in Chapter 4.
