ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 opens by suggesting that destinations and DMOs need to place a higher priority in the future on sustainable tourism and social responsibility. These are a foundation for the execution of all destination management roles. The concepts of destination sustainable tourism, destination stewardship, and DSR are defined and explained. The United Nations seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are covered. Thereafter, responsible tourism, regenerative tourism, declarations and pledges, ethical tourism, ecotourism, community-based tourism (CBT), pro-poor tourism (PPT), and social tourism are described. The greenwashing concept is explored as a negative aspect in the communication of sustainability and social responsibility. Chapter 2 closes with an account of doughnut economics and the circular economy.
