ABSTRACT

This chapter explains why implementation stages are important, and discusses the relationship between multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), social-emotional response to intervention, and implementation science. Implementation science is concerned with the adoption of evidence-based supports and programs found within an intervention service delivery model. It suggests that schools study and evaluate the common factors and barriers that may be interfering with the proper adoption and execution of evidence-based supports. For example, a school district may have properly designed and implemented MTSS and the intervention service delivery models comprising of MTSS. Through using and referencing the stages of implementation science, educators can better build and sustain Tier 1 social-emotional programs. Generally, implementation science is broken up into four stages of implementation, which include exploration, installation, initial implementation, and full implementation. Through utilizing the stages of implementation science, educators are better able to increase the likelihood of adopting a new program, utilize resources more effectively, and improve sustainability.
