ABSTRACT

This chapter describes components of high-quality implementation and adaptation of SEL programs. It provides guidance regarding monitoring implementation and collecting data to determine effectiveness. Adaptations, particularly in schools, are important considerations when implementing SEL programs. Adaptations such as shortening lessons due to time constraints, modifying activities/exercises to tailor to student interest or developmental level, or reducing content that may be less relevant are common. During implementation, evaluation of the SEL program should occur in two ways. The first is the ongoing monitoring and measuring of the components that contribute to implementation, or in other words, evaluating fidelity of implementation. The second way is the ongoing monitoring of desired outcomes that the SEL program was intended to target. Professional development, training about the SEL program selected, and technical assistance were likely implemented for team members, implementers, and support personnel earlier in the process and before implementation.
